Frequently Asked Questions
Who runs Femmes du Jour?
Femmes du Jour is an LLC formed in Denver, Colorado, by Jae Morgan, an indie Sapphic author and publisher. We are a legitimate LGBTQ+-owned business dedicated to supporting indie authors and the Sapphic community.
Why did you create this website?
Two main reasons. First and foremost, my 9 to 5 (actually 5am-1pm) sales job is a nightmare. The ultimate goal for Femmes du Jour is to open a brick-and-mortar store in Denver, Colorado, that is dedicated to Sapphic books. Until then, we are getting started online. The other reason is Amazon is filled with 10M+ books, and sometimes visibility is hard to achieve as an indie author. My goal is to create the ultimate place for Sapphic readers to come find their next favorite book.
How do you obtain the books you sell?
As an independent bookseller, we utilize IngramSpark and other distributors to ship books directly to customers. Because we purchase from the distributors, authors earn money from their royalties, just as if you purchased from Amazon or other retailers.
Why should we buy from you instead of Amazon?
Over the past few years, the industry has seen a huge dislike and distrust for big business. While we do not support the ban on Amazon due to the eBook sales for independent authors' livelihoods, there are ways to continue to support the Sapphic community and small businesses at the same time. By purchasing paperbacks from small businesses like FEMMES DU JOUR, the authors still get their same royalties while passing along a portion of those sales to a small business instead of Amazon.
What about shipping costs? I already have Amazon Prime for free shipping.
At this time, we charge for shipping, but we are not increasing them to pocket any extra money. Our distribution warehouse charges a flat fee for the first item and a per-piece price after that, no matter the weight of the book. Our goal, as we grow, is to offer an annual membership that will include either free or discounted shipping costs.
What happens if a book isn't available on your website?
We pull our data from IngramSpark, which does include Amazon KDP Extended Distribution titles. We search for books based on the BISAC code, which is like the Dewey Decimal System. If a book is not labeled correctly, it will not pull into our system. If we are missing a title, it could be unavailable, sold out, or just labelled wrong—but please, reach out so we can attempt to stock it.
Are there physical copies of all these books in your closet?
No, it's impossible for us to stock every book. Currently, we are utilizing IngramSpark's warehouses around the country. Based on their inventory, we are able to mine the data to provide books that can ship within a few days. If a book is out of stock at Ingram, it will be out of stock on our website.
Where did you find this many Sapphic books?
IngramSpark has 10M+ books in their database. We use the BISAC codes, which are essentially like a Dewey Decimal System. We use these codes to look up genres based on "lesbian" topics, such as FICTION / LGBTQ+ / Lesbian. There are codes for general lesbian fiction, romance, erotica, and young adult. We pull from all fiction codes for lesbian characters. This also may be why a book is not listed on this site. If the author didn't label the book under one of the lesbian codes, it might not pull into our system.
Do you or will you sell eBooks?
At this time, we are only selling physical books in paperback or hardcover. Most Sapphic authors utilize Kindle Unlimited for their bread and butter. We will not take that away from them and we support those authors ourselves by reading eBooks on KU. We ask that if you do prefer digital eBooks that you buy or subscribe to Kindle Unlimited to read.
Is this even legal?
100%. All of the books ordered on this website are purchased from IngramSpark via their wholesale division. We've invested the money to keep a huge database of older titles, as well as new releases, flowing so that there's always something new. We do not pirate books. We support indie authors as well as bestsellers within the Sapphic fiction community. Every book you buy from us, authors receive royalties.
I'm an author and I want my book removed?
We only sell books that are listed on Amazon's Extended Distribution and/or IngramSpark's Distribution, which had to have been set by the indie author and/or publishing company. In order to have your book removed, you will need to go into your KDP account or IngramSpark account and remove the extended distribution attributes. When accepting those terms, the author and publisher agree to allow sales outside of Amazon by booksellers around the world. Femmes du Jour is a licensed bookseller under these terms of service.
